Everyone would love to own and shoot with a thermal rifle sight here is a short guide for purchasing a thermal sight

Firstly you must know at what distance you will be shooting your game at this determines which thermal sight will suit your needs to get good identification of your prey. Keep in mind that all you are going to see is the thermal image of what you are about to shoot at and is sometimes very hard to identify your prey unless its walking or running or very close

I have totally mistaken a fox for a stump for just the fact it was sitting still and did not identify it until it moved - and yes the stump, trees and stones hold heat from the day through to the night

The other thing about thermal is that they cannot see through solid objects and very thick bush and grass you must be able to still see through the bush or grass with your eyes during the day to see the heat signature at night

These are the thermal sight with what sensor they have and lens size and best distance to use them these distances are based on a fox sized prey

  • The 384x288 19mm thermal sight will give you good range and identification out to 70m to 130m
  • The 384x288 25mm thermal sight will give you good range and identification out to 90m to 150m
  • The 384x288 50mm thermal sight will give you good range and identification out to 100m to 200m
  • The 640x480 50mm thermal sight will give you good range and identification out to 100m to 250m
  • The 640x480 100mm thermal sight will give you good range and identification out to 100m to 350m

As you can see the better the sensor and the bigger the lens the longer the distance can be shot out to and with the 640x480 sensor you can zoom in a lot more without losing image quality

These distances are only a guide and could be stretch either way meaning you could shoot prey at much closer distances and you may be able to see prey a lot further out butt will not have the image definition and quality
